Steyr Rifle

PRE 1900 (No license required) Here we have a very nice and rare Mannlicher M1895 in the original 8x50R chambering. The Mannlicher is one of the most recognisable rifles associated with the German and Austro-Hungarian armies during WW1. It was used alongside the Gewehr 98 and the Kar98, the predecessor to the infamous K98. The action was considered revolutionary at the time, as it utilised a linear straight-pull action as opposed to a conventional bolt action. Unfortunately, the M95 was phased out of official service around the beginning in the early 30s due to manufacturing costs, the complexity of production compared to a standard bolt action, and the increasingly obsolete low-capacity en-bloc system. However, during WW2, Mannlichers did see a short resurgence, being used by mostly Axis forces. Condition: Manufactured in 1897 in Vienna by Steyr, the rifle presents in good condition. The metalwork is in good condition; however, it shows signs of honest use and some light peppering. The action and operation is smooth, locks up tightly, and functions as intended. The bolt face is relatively clean and free from pitting. The barrel is in better-than-good condition, with plenty of life left. Everything, including the stock, is matching except for the bolt and barrel band. The wood is in good condition and has no visible cracks; however, it does have its fair share of scratches and bruises. Some interesting things to note on this particular piece are that the rear sight notch in the first position has been opened up to give a larger sight picture. It is possible this was done to aid in faster target acquisition in the close quarters of trench fighting, but this is only a speculation. The stock has an inscription on the inside that reads, “B.R. [removed].” (Photos provided.) The rifle also comes with a M95 sling and an original bayonet. The bayonet is in good condition but displays signs of obvious field use. The blade is in fair-to-good condition, and the scabbard is in good condition; however, the hanger is slightly loose. (Original clips also available) All in all, this is an amazing piece of history that would make an incredible wall piece or an excellent addition to your vintage rifle collection. Although not particularly rare in 8x56, original pre-1900 variants in the original 8x50R chambering rarely come onto the market, especially the carbine version. So don’t miss this opportunity!
