A beautiful example of an early Colt revolver, with more than a century of history behind it. The Colt Police Positive was introduced in the early 1900s and quickly became a popular compact revolver for both law enforcement and civilian use. The “Positive” name came from Colt’s Positive Lock system, an internal hammer-block safety designed to prevent the revolver from firing unless the trigger was deliberately pulled. This particular example is an early Police Positive .38, serial number 77827, placing it in the early production period at approximately 1914. Given the age of Colt production records and differing published serial references, we have described the manufacture date as circa 1914 rather than representing it as an exact factory-confirmed date. The barrel is correctly marked “POLICE POSITIVE .38” and it is chambered in .38 Colt New Police, which is the Colt designation for the .38 S&W cartridge — importantly, this revolver is not .38 Special. For a revolver that’s approximately 110 years old, it presents very nicely. It remains in good condition for its age, retaining a good amount of finish with general handling marks, scratches and wear consistent with a firearm of this vintage. The timber grips also present well and add plenty of character. A great little piece for the Colt collector or anyone looking for an early 20th-century revolver with genuine history behind it.
